Abstract

The cooperative principles should be considered as a whole and should, therefore, be valued jointly. The first principle, of free membership, present from the Statutes of the Cooperative of Rochdale, is, according to the Report that accompanies the Declaration of the International Cooperative Alliance on cooperative identity, indisputably the most powerful, but often the most undervalued of the principles.
