Abstract

This article examines the historical origins and doctrinal principles on which the concept of cooperative autonomy is based versus the State. It also examines the complementarity of the concept with other cooperative postulates and principles such as open and voluntary membership and democratic control. In the light of these principles, the development of the cooperative autonomy precept within the cooperative legislation in Puerto Rico is analysed, with special focus on the changes in the governmental structures of supervision and regulation of the Puerto Rican cooperative sector in the last few years.
