Urbi et orbi: Cooperativism as a practical expresión of the principle of subsidiarity
Abstract
The ecclesiastical magisterium on the social doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church relates the salvific importance of cooperation with the principle of subsidiarity, which considers the degree and mode of State intervention for the common good. This teaching finds in cooperativism a form of integration between science and faith in a practical reason for economically organized communities. The principle of subsidiarity does not find positivity in a specific provision of the Federal Constitution of Brazil. But the contemplation there of the freedom to establish cooperatives as a fundamental guarantee of citizenship combined with the mandate to the State to encourage and promote cooperatives in the constitutional economic order are eloquent of what can be inferred that Brazilian law recognizes the excellence of cooperatives expressed in Christian theology in terms of the radically communitarian character of happy life in society. Hence, it can be concluded that the principle of subsidiarity is implicitly incorporated into the body of the Democratic State of Law in Brazil.
