The Spreading of the Mondragon Cooperative Experience. From Arrasate to the world via the French Basque Country

Abstract
Mondragon is one of the most prominent cooperative initiatives worldwide. Its singularity and its size, coupled with a strong commitment to dissemination, have positioned this network of interconnected cooperatives as a leading example of the potential of the Basque Social and Solidarity Economy. When examining the spreading process of the Mondragon Cooperativism, it is often assumed that it was primarily a grassroots phenomenon within the Basque Country, and that academic publications arose mainly due to English and American contributions. This article challenges these assumptions through a rigorous investigation of the diffusion and dissemination processes surrounding this experience. We demonstrate that the early cooperators had a clear intention to promote their model both at the popular level within the Basque country, and within academic discourse. Furthermore, we examine how international outreach was achieved, particularly through early publications in France, which were driven by the first generation of founders and the interest the Experience generated among various social and political actors in the French Basque Country.
